Instagram really decided to hit the gas this month. Updates are dropping left and right, and the biggest one you’ve probably noticed is the shiny new repost feature for posts and Reels. Instagram clearly wanted to jump in on that trend as well, letting people share content straight to their own feeds. But while reposting sounds straightforward, the real question is how to see who reposted your Instagram post. If someone’s putting your content on their feed, you’ll probably want to know about it.
Reposts are great for visibility, but they’re not the only way to spread your content. Shares work just as well to get your posts in front of new eyes, especially when you want that extra push beyond your usual circle.
What Is the Instagram Repost Feature?
The Instagram repost feature is a built-in tool that lets users share existing posts or Reels directly to their own feeds. It’s marked by a two-arrow icon under the content, and tapping it instantly places the repost in front of your followers.
This is separate from the Story share option. Story shares disappear after 24 hours, while reposts stay visible in feeds until they’re manually removed. Reposts also show up in a dedicated Reposts tab on the user’s profile, sitting alongside their main grid and tagged photos. That way, anyone can quickly see what a person has chosen to share from others — and that’s why it’s important to know how to see who reposted your Instagram post.
Conditions for Someone to Repost Your Content
Not every post on Instagram can be reposted. A few rules decide what’s eligible:
- Your account must be public. The repost option doesn’t show up on private accounts, even for followers.
- “Allow Reposts” is on by default. Public accounts automatically allow reposting, but you can switch this off in settings if you don’t want others sharing your content.
- Some posts are off-limits. Anything private, archived, or deleted can’t be reposted. Once a post is removed from your profile, all existing reposts of it disappear too.
How to See Who Reposted Your Instagram Post
Instagram gives you a few ways to figure out when someone shares your content to their feed:
- Notifications: The most direct method. Anytime someone reposts your post or Reel, you’ll get an alert in your activity feed with their username attached. It shows up just like a like or comment notification — for example, “username reposted your post” (see screenshot below).
- Insights (for professional accounts): If you’ve switched to a Creator or Business profile, Insights will show you the total number of reposts your content received. It won’t list out usernames, but it’s useful for tracking overall reach.
- Checking Profiles: Since reposts live in a dedicated Reposts tab, you can visit another user’s profile and see if your post shows up there. This is more manual, but it works if you suspect certain accounts are sharing your content.
- Friends Tab: Instagram’s Friends tab could sometimes surface reposts from people you follow.

Privacy and Control Over Reposts
You don’t have to let everyone reshare your posts. By default, Instagram turns Allow Reposts on for public accounts, but you can switch it off anytime in your settings. Once it’s off, the repost button disappears from your content.
One catch: you can’t selectively take down someone else’s repost while leaving others up. The only way to stop reposting entirely is by disabling the option for your account, or by archiving or deleting the original post.
There’s also control on your side as a viewer. The Friends tab shows when people you follow repost content, but if you’d rather keep your own reposts private, you can turn off that visibility in settings. It’s another reminder that Instagram’s privacy tools only go so far just like when it comes to seeing who checks your profile.
